Going away from home for the first time is a big step in life. It takes a good reason to do it. For first-generation students and many other college students that reason is college. Some students choose to stay close and go to college near their home or commute. But others have to travel miles to a new city with new people, places and surroundings. It is saying goodbye to everything they have ever known. But it’s worth it because they are going away to pursue and education.
According to College Board, 90% of the students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo are from someplace in-state. First-generation students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo tend to be from somewhere in-state because tuition is less-expensive than out-of-state tuition which makes it more difficult for low-income out-of-state students to attend. Also, only in-state students are eligible for the the Educational Opportunity Program. Even though first-generation students are from within state, some students still feel that impact of being relatively far from home.
